Mural 139 Highett St, Richmond Housing Estate in collaboration with Yarra Youth Services

Funding from Dept of Family, Fairness and Housing (DFFH)

Continuing their commitment to professional development and community-integrated programming, the Yarra Youth Services Graffiti Diversion program recently painted the base of building 139 Highett St of the Department of Fairness, Family and Housing site in North Richmond.

Supported through the coordination of Paula Mahoney and funding from DFFH, the project enabled five young participants from the program to receive an artist assistant salary in accordance with the National Association of Visual Arts (NAVA) payment schedule and receive certification in Working From Heights.

Working alongside artist Christian McMahon, the outcome of the project was a site-specific response to community consultation, realising a vibrant series of four panels along the base of tower 139 integrating these communities and reflecting the site’s location adjacent to the sprawling community garden.

The Yarra Youth Services Graffiti Diversion program is a technical, social, safe, and supportive space that connects conversations about art, community, law, collaboration, professional development and justice and run on a model of peer leadership for young people interested in urban painting practices.
